FILTER & FOCUS

Eat, Sleep & Stay-at-Home Retreat

It’s the perfect staycation for artists: no flights, no packing, no schedules…just art, right where you are.

“Filter & Focus” was first introduced at our ARTfuel in-person retreats in 2024. Earlier this year, we hosted it online for the first time, and the response was incredible! Artists from all over the world joined us for this four-week journey. (See their testimonials below.)

Now, we’re excited to offer it again, and this time as a go-at-your-own-pace course you can enjoy from the comfort of your own studio.
There’s no pressure—no deadlines, no assignments to complete by a certain date, and no live calls to attend. The only schedule is yours.

There’s no place like home…

Our course breaks down the principles and elements of art and gives you hands-on experience simplifying composition, value and color. The hands-on part is important. It’s one thing to understand a concept, but an entirely different thing to implement it. Our exercises will introduce tools and ways to approach your work that have always been there, but just weren’t on your radar. This will open up a variety of new possibilities for you. These exercises provide guardrails to help you narrow your focus. Our painting prompts challenge you to apply the learning to your work. The result… your work,  your voice, amplified. This flexible, self-paced course includes all the lessons and exercises from our sold-out 2024 destination retreats. If you missed out on a spot or prefer to learn from home, this is your moment.

This course might be for you if…

  • You feel like your work is all over the place and you need some focus

  • You’re looking for a new way to see your work

  • You like to learn in the comfort of your own studio

  • You like to learn at your own pace

  • You’re still on the waitlist for an ARTfuel retreat

I was a bit lost not quite knowing how to edit my work. I have taken workshops in the past that were all very useful and gave lots of information, however I was not quite sure how to apply it when it came to simplifying my work and having a more clear path to the final result.

The biggest change? Using limitations such as a limited palette. Making a color inventory, something I never did before. Grouping values to use proportion and create balance and dominance. The most important one likely, has been choosing which principles to dial up. That was like, WOW! I can’t believe I can do that! It makes total sense. Before this class, I had received lots of overwhelming information that I was not quite sure how to use. After this class, I feel I can develop a way to actually apply that info.

Your Instructors

Susan Melrath and Terri Froelich will provide video presentations, demos and downloadable PDF’s to walk you through the principles and elements of art, uncovering the essence of your inspiration and narrowing down the formal choices to support that inspiration. The innovative exercises explain color, value, and design in a whole new way.

Susan Melrath

Susan has been a painter for her entire adult life - working as a published illustrator for many years, and a studio artist for the last twenty. As a teacher, she has helped thousands of artists find their way to making strong, authentic work. Her greatest love is helping painters understand how to organize the elements in their paintings to make them as strong and compelling as can be. Susan’s work can be seen at Art & Light Gallery in Greenville, SC and Museo Gallery in Langley, WA.

Terri Froelich

Terri Froelich is an abstract painter and photographer in Sausalito, California.  Terri worked as a commercial photographer for many years before switching her focus to painting in 2002. She is represented by Julie Nester Gallery (Park City, UT), Slate Contemporary (Oakland, CA), and Kennedy Contemporary (Newport Beach, CA). Her passion for teaching has helped many artists find solutions in their process and strengthen their work. Terri and Susan launched ARTfuel in 2023 to help artists utilize the principles and elements of art in their work, offer new perspectives and assist them with their artistic journey through online courses and in-person retreats around the world.

Before the start of this course, I felt muddled due to too much, sometimes contradictory, information from past art course experiences. Therefore, all of my work has felt and looked muddled too.

The clarity of teaching about some of the key principles and elements of painting, through excellent demonstrations and exercises, woke me out of my confusion when I really saw and understood what we can achieve when we focus and simplify. I can really see and feel the difference that value grouping, limited palette, colour temperature, and saturation make. Simply BRILLIANT!

“I have taken many art classes in my life, and I would say that Filter & Focus is definitely one of the very best—if not the best. I learned a tremendous amount about composition and various aspects of color including saturation, temperature, complementary palettes, and more. Both Susan and Terri are amazing teachers, and there’s a great chemistry between them, which makes their presentations fun, interesting, and informative. I cannot recommend this course highly enough. What I’ve learned in the past four weeks has been truly transformative and will absolutely help me take my painting to the next level!”

Hear from people who have taken Filter & Focus

  • “The exercises we did were transformative. One key takeaway for me was the concept of narrowing the parameters in order to create more cohesive paintings. This approach challenged me to focus on making more intentional choices with colour and composition which will lead to stronger work. I got the opportunity to try new things I wouldn’t normally do. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to push their artistic boundaries!”

    ~  Andrea Piccinin

  • “A highly recommended course!!  I  was fortunate to be able to attend “The Filter and Focus” workshop with Susan Melrath and Terry Froelich.  As many of us voiced, we had never been taught the Principles and Elements of Design that was so thoroughly provided in this course.  We were given a tool kit that is an endless exploration for both beginner and professional artist.  Lectures, illustrated examples, exercises and instruction were generously given for us to apply to our own work.”

    ~ Dianne Cacchioni

  • "This retreat was hands down the most inspiring class I've ever taken. I suspect my next ArtFuel retreat will once again surpass expectations. Terri and Susan are generous, committed and caring coaches, two of the most highly qualified out there. The knowledge they shared was innovative and has changed my approach to art making. I soaked up the challenging exercises which helped me digest the concepts. I'm eager to continue learning from these two very gifted artists and teachers."

    ~ Suzanne Lewis

  • "As a fairly experienced artist, I found the quality of the teaching & learning to be first-class. The lessons were very consolidated and content-rich, with challenging exercises. I learned more in one week than I did in a year of art school...and I might not be exaggerating too much!"

    ~ Susan Walker

  • "I left the "Filter and Focus" retreat in Santa Fe filled with gratitude for what I learned and the people I learned it with. I'm grateful for having the opportunity to immerse myself in my art practice and learn how to push my art forward. The daily exercises were thoughtful and well explained. They illustrated art principles and elements and how to optimize their use in our own style of work. They were generous with their time and knowledge. They encouraged all of us to paint the things we love, and to use the tools to make that art better. This retreat was a game changer!"

    ~ Pat Goeke

  • What was the most important thing you took away from Filter & Focus? "Art wise-- a ton! My thought… ‘Color became a friend that I want to get to know more.’. Before I have been a grab a color when I need a pop or something in the design - but not taking into account the specific shade/tint, saturation or harmony that color addition would do for the painting. New mindset for me with this methodical way of teaching you gave step by step - day by day. The exercises helped me to put into action the learnings of color/ saturation/ temperature etc. AND huge for me, is the teaching of dialing up and down what works and flows for you. The way Susan drilled into it- it was a bingo for me. I couldn't have answered that until this course/teachings/philosophy was shared with me. Now I confidently can answer that question- ‘Lorie = color and shapes’. The result is now in my head I know better how to start a painting, how to move through and what sings to me to make a Lorie painting that I like. I finally have a very simple road map---color and shape is my base. As you say.. stay focused and use my own filter ( color/shape). Love this so much!"

Student work and exercise examples

This course is fantastic! I have never seen so many painting Principals and Elements with their effects together. My head was spinning every now and then, but the great explanation of the application of the topics allowed me to follow the course well.
With this knowledge I can move forward for a long time. And that's what matters to me.
It's also nice that there is a community within the course, thank you all!
Susan and Terri have a lot of knowledge, are patient, and give very useful tips.
I would like to thank them for their super online course. I enjoyed it.
Thank you so much Susan and Terri!!
